66 kilometers in around 23 hours: This is the #Way of St. James or #Camino de Santiago from Gran Canaria. The first stop when you start the path in Maspalomas is the Bio Finca in Arteara. Completely satisfied, many stop by to have something to drink and eat and many also stay overnight. After breakfast, most people set off early in the day towards “Tunte” – San Bartholomé de Tirajana.

The Way of St. James on Gran Canaria has its own pilgrimage card. The Las Palmas Pilgrims Association issues this. To get in touch, you can do so on their site. Just click on the logo!

It is structured so that it can be completed in three stages, which does not mean that it can be completed in one or two stages for elite athletes or in four or five stages for pilgrims who want to enjoy the Camino de Santiago. The difficulty lies in the limited range of accommodation options and their unevenness. We recommend reserving the accommodation before the start.

Cautious!!! with the high level of difficulty of the section: Maspalomas – Tunte. Please inform us about the route and weather conditions. For many people, the first section of the path ends with us in the Bio Finca in Arteara.

A large part of this route, which connects the south of the island with the north, was already used by the ancient Canarians. Later, herders drove their herds along this path to fresh pastures and it has also been used by pilgrims since time immemorial.

The Way of St. James on Gran Canaria invites you to explore the gorges in the south of the island in almost year-round sunshine. A few kilometers further we delve into the secrets of two old volcanic cauldrons (Tirajana and Tejeda) and are enchanted from afar by the panoramic view of the youngest volcanoes in the north of the island. Along the entire route we seem to be able to listen to the island’s very own heartbeat. If you don’t want to miss a single detail of the spectacle of Gran Canaria’s mountains and its impressive natural landscape, you should always keep your eyes and ears open.

In the last and third section of the route, the path leads downhill towards the north of the island, past the youngest volcanoes. Without a doubt, another unforgettable highlight for the senses.

Pilgrims gain remission of their sins after entering the church of Santiago de los Caballeros through the Holy Door.

But every journey needs to be well prepared and that’s why it’s important to get the appropriate information beforehand. The association has its own website: Camino de Santiago on Gran Canaria is available at www.caminosantiagoentrevolcanes.com (unfortunately only in Spanish). For this purpose, the municipal administration of Gáldar has launched the website www.jacobeogaldar.es. The clear site offers comprehensive and up-to-date information in a total of four languages. Particular emphasis was placed on ensuring quick and easy access to the various content. Beautiful images ensure an attractive design.

This is an important step in making this Camino de Santiago or Way of St. James better known digitally. Information is everything when it comes to encouraging travelers to walk or mountain bike this 66-kilometer route, which is part of the historical, cultural, artistic and natural heritage. More than once time seems to stand still!

¡Buen camino! Good way!

¡Buen camino! Guten Weg!
